Ingredients
Beef
1 lb thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin preferred)
1/2 onion, thinly sliced

Sauce
2 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp mirin (or honey if needed)
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup water

Rice
1 cup jasmine rice (uncooked)
2 cups water
1/2 tsp salt

Optional
Soft boiled egg
Green onions

Directions

Step 1 – Get the Rice Dialed In
Rinse your rice under cold water until it runs mostly clear, then cook it using your standard method. Let it rest covered before fluffing so the texture finishes properly.
This is your base, so don’t rush it. Good rice carries the entire bowl.

Step 2 – Prep Everything Cleanly
Slice your onion thin so it cooks quickly and blends into the sauce. If your beef isn’t pre-sliced, cut it into thin strips so it cooks fast and stays tender.
Thin cuts matter here. Thick beef turns this into a completely different dish.

Step 3 – Build the Sauce First
In a pan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, mirin (or honey), sugar, and water. Let it come to a light simmer so everything dissolves and blends together evenly.
You’re not boiling it hard, just bringing it together so the flavor is balanced before adding anything else.

Step 4 – Cook the Onions into the Sauce
Add the sliced onions into the pan and let them simmer for a few minutes until they soften. Stir occasionally so they cook evenly and start absorbing the sauce.
You want them soft and slightly translucent, not raw and overpowering.

Step 5 – Add the Beef and Watch It Closely
Add the beef into the pan and spread it out so it cooks evenly. Let it simmer gently in the sauce for just a few minutes until fully cooked.
This cooks fast. Leave it too long and it goes from tender to tough.

Step 6 – Let It Soak Up Flavor
Once the beef is cooked, let everything sit in the sauce for another minute so it absorbs more flavor. Keep the heat low and let it come together naturally.
This is what makes it feel like a real dish instead of just meat in sauce.

Step 7 – Build the Bowl Cleanly
Add rice to your bowl, then spoon the beef and onions over the top along with some of the sauce. Spread it out so every bite gets coated.
Now it actually looks like something you’d order, not just something you threw together.

Step 8 – Add Extras If You Want
Top with a soft boiled egg or green onions if you want to level it up. Keep it simple so it still fits your system.
These are upgrades, not requirements.

Step 9 – Quick Challenge
While it cools slightly, hit 15–20 pushups. No standing there waiting for steam to disappear.

Step 10 – Eat Like It’s Fuel
Sit down and eat it while it’s warm. Don’t rush it, but don’t overthink it either.
This is one of those meals that actually hits and still keeps you on track.
